Compare the New Subaru Crosstrek to the Subaru Outback
Comparing the New Subaru Crosstrek vs. the New Subaru Outback
If you're shopping at Subaru of Cherry Hill and you serve Cherry Hill, NJ, Haddonfield, Collingswood, Marlton, Mount Laurel, Moorestown, or even commuters into Center City Philadelphia, the Crosstrek and Outback both carry Subaru's DNA, but they're different beasts. Find out which one is right for you before you visit us for a test drive.

Performance
The Crosstrek is the lighter, feistier sibling. With a standard 2.0-liter boxer four and 152 horsepower-or the available 2.5-liter with 182 hp on higher trims-you'll feel agile in suburban streets and winding Pennsylvania back roads. Every Crosstrek comes with Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and a CVT that tries to stay smooth. Ground clearance is solid at 8.7 inches and the Wilderness trim nudges it further.
The Outback, meanwhile, leans toward confidence over nimbleness. Standard models use a 2.5-liter boxer four putting out 182 hp and 176 lb-ft. But Outback XT and Wilderness trims offer a 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer with 260 hp for those who want a little shove. All Outbacks also carry standard AWD. The Outback is heavier and less sprightly, but trades that for torque, stability, and comfort on longer drives.
Technology
The Crosstrek doesn't pretend to be flashy, but it offers modern conveniences and a seven-inch display. On mid and upper trims, you get an upgraded 11.6-inch screen with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and Subaru's infotainment system.
The Outback steps things up. Newer models show digital instrument clusters, big infotainment interfaces, and more integration. The latest Outback also enhances road-noise isolation and uses aerodynamic design to cut wind noise. Higher trims feature a 12-speaker Harman/Kardon premium audio system, navigation, and additional driver-assist technology. If you drive daily between Mount Laurel and Center City Philly, that extra quiet makes a difference.

Interior Space
The Crosstrek is compact, but never cramped. It seats five with acceptable legroom for adults in front, but rear passengers will feel the pinch on long rides. The materials are durable, not luxurious. It's great for city runs or weekend escapes, and with comfortable legroom both up front and in the rear, it can even handle a decent road trip.
The Outback is more generous. It provides more headroom, shoulder room and rear legroom for your taller drivers and passengers. It's certainly enough that your passengers from Haddonfield to Marlton won't complain. And because the Outback is longer and wider, it delivers a more composed ride for four adults and their stuff.
Cargo Space
In the Crosstrek, cargo volume is respectable for its class: around 20 cubic feet with the rear seats up, and about 55 cubic feet with them down. Don't expect floor-level loading or huge breadth-but it's useable for groceries, gear or weekend bags.
The Outback shines here. Standard models carry 33 cubic feet behind the rear seat, with 76 cubic feet with the seats folded. The Outback's greater length and boxier profile give you more depth, height and flexibility for bikes, skis, or bigger hauls.

Safety
Both models come jammed with Subaru's safety DNA. The Crosstrek includes standard driver-assist tech: automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot alert, rear cross-traffic alert, and more. The structure is solid, and Subaru's reputation for stability is well earned.
The Outback often adds extra layers. All trims carry Subaru's EyeSight driver assist, adaptive cruise, lane centering, and more. In new generations, Subaru is introducing advanced features like emergency stop assist, safe-lane selection if you become unresponsive, and hands-free driving on certain highways up to 85 mph. Because the Outback is more technologically ambitious, it often bets on safety upgrades earlier.
